About the Endangered Islands Campaign

WE ARE ALL IN THE SAME BOAT

With this slogan the Endangered Islands Campaign (EIC) was launched at the January 2005 Mauritius International Conference on Sustainable Development of the Small Islands Developing States (SIDS). A special event was organized by the Climate Institute with the support from the United Nations Foundation (UNF) to announce the launching of the campaign. Newsletter articles and press releases (cross-link) were issued at the conference.

EIC’s mission is

  • to assist small island nations in developing capacity to respond and recover from the potential effects of climate change.

Through combined efforts with partner organizations, the EIC helps identify vulnerabilities of island states to climate change and create global awareness of the moral and economic dimensions of such climate change. As such, the EIC serves as an umbrella, encompassing several projects designed to help participating small island nations:

Participants in the EIC include island nations in the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), " a coalition of small island and low-lying coastal countries that share similar development challenges and concerns about the environment, especially their vulnerability to the adverse effects of global climate change."
